The A-Frame Cabin is our first foray into prefabricated panel construction. The A-Frame Cabin boasts a rich history in architecture and gained prominence in post-war America with the expansion of the national road network and the rise of the middle class. As remote locations became more accessible, lumber companies began producing recreational A-Frame kits that could be easily assembled on-site, leading to their widespread adoption. A-Frame cabins started to see a decline in the 70’s as typical construction methods became more accessible in remote areas. With a rise in construction costs, and a concern for more energy efficient dwellings, we see that once more the A-Frame can play an important role in creating sustainable recreational housing.

For us, the A-Frame represents a significant departure from the rectilinear forms of urban and suburban housing, making it a pivotal form of recreational dwelling. This important shift in geometry, combined with a warm wood interior signals a shift from our urban lives and places us in a mood to relax. Our A-Frame cabin consists of one bedroom on the main floor, and two additional bedrooms in the loft. There is a large open space facing the view which contains the kitchen, living and dining spaces. The washroom on the lower floor is separated into three compartments so that it can be used by multiple people at once.

The living space features a large, glazed wall with sliding door to maximize natural light and views while the loft bedrooms open to long skylights for star gazing. Each space within the cabin has a unique way it connects to the outdoors and brings in natural light. The cabin is composed of 24 structural panels ensuring quick installation in remote regions
